Bhutan Travel Costs and Essentials

Traveling to Bhutan involves a one-time visa processing fee of US$40 per person. In addition, all visitors are required to pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), which is a daily levy that supports Bhutan’s environmental and cultural preservation efforts. The SDF is US$100 per day for adults, while children aged 6 to 12 receive a 50% discount, and children under 6 are exempt. For example, a couple traveling with a 6-year-old child for four nights would pay a total of US$2000 in SDF. Please note that this amount does not cover accommodation, meals, transport, or other travel expenses.

Flights to Bhutan can only be booked through the two authorized airlines—Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines—which operate from cities such as Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok, and Singapore. Both airlines offer Economy and Business class options. Accommodation ranges from luxury hotels to budget stays and homestays, catering to various travel preferences. Transport options include SUVs, mid-sized vans, and buses, depending on the group size, and come with a vetted professional driver and airport transfers.

If you plan to explore regions beyond Paro and Thimphu or go on a trek, you must be accompanied by a licensed tour guide, who typically charges a daily fee. All guides are fluent in English. There are also entry fees for major cultural sites, which can be paid on arrival. Optional activities such as cycling, river rafting, traditional archery, hot stone baths, and photo sessions in traditional attire are available at an extra cost and may require advance booking.
