Trekking
Itinerary
Day 1: Paro – Jele Dzong
Your trek begins with a gradual climb from Paro valley through blue pine forests. As you ascend, the valley opens up, offering sweeping views of the Paro town below. After about 4 to 5 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Jele Dzong, a small fortress that once served as a strategic lookout. The dzong sits majestically on a hilltop at around 3,560 meters and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Camp nearby and enjoy your first night under the stars.
Day 2: Jele Dzong – Jangchulakha
Today’s journey takes you through thick alpine forests filled with rhododendrons and dwarf oaks. The trail involves several short climbs and descents along a ridgeline with occasional views of Mount Jomolhari if the weather is clear. You may encounter yak herders along the way, giving a glimpse into the semi-nomadic lifestyle. After 4 to 5 hours of trekking, reach Jangchulakha at an altitude of 3,770 meters, where you’ll camp in a wide meadow.
Day 3: Jangchulakha – Jimilangtsho
The trail today is scenic with stunning mountain views and several ridgeline paths. After a few hours of hiking, you’ll reach Jimilangtsho, a serene high-altitude lake known for its large trout. Surrounded by rocky hills and dwarf rhododendrons, the lake reflects the sky like a mirror. Camping here offers a peaceful, remote wilderness experience at 3,870 meters.
Day 4: Jimilangtsho – Simkotra Tsho
Begin the day with a series of short climbs and descents through rocky trails and open yak pastures. You’ll pass another beautiful lake, Janetso, and continue to Simkotra Tsho at 4,110 meters, the highest campsite on the trek. The lake sits nestled in a quiet alpine basin, and the area is known for its clear night skies, perfect for stargazing.
Day 5: Simkotra Tsho – Phajoding – Thimphu
Today’s trail begins with a gentle climb before descending towards Phajoding Monastery. Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayan range, including Mount Gangkar Puensum on a clear day. After reaching Phajoding, a revered monastic site, begin the final descent through forests of blue pine and spruce until you reach the outskirts of Thimphu city. Your vehicle will receive you and transfer you to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
Day 6: Thimphu Sightseeing or Departure
Depending on your schedule, you can spend the day exploring Bhutan’s capital. Visit iconic sites such as the Buddha Dordenma Statue, the National Memorial Chorten, and Tashichho Dzong. Stroll through the local markets or simply relax before your departure.
