Currency & Banking in Bhutan
Bhutan’s official currency is the Ngultrum (Nu), which is pegged to the Indian Rupee (INR) at par—meaning both currencies are accepted and hold the same value within the country. Updated foreign exchange rates can be checked on local bank websites or at Paro International Airport, where currency exchange services are also available. Additionally, local banks across the country provide currency exchange facilities.
While Indian Rupees and US Dollars are widely accepted in many local shops, it’s advisable to carry some Ngultrum for smaller purchases or remote areas. Travelers may also carry traveler’s cheques, which can be easily exchanged or withdrawn in local currency.
ATMs are widely available in most towns and cities and accept Visa and MasterCard for cash withdrawals. Furthermore, many hotels, restaurants, and shops offer POS (Point of Sale) services for card payments, ensuring a convenient cashless experience for visitors.
