Overview
This 8-day cultural journey through western Bhutan is designed around the vibrant Druk Wangyal Tsechu festival held at the scenic Dochula Pass. The itinerary includes immersive experiences in the cities of Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha, offering visits to ancient fortresses, sacred temples, and stunning Himalayan landscapes. Highlights include the dramatic hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), the unique Druk Wangyal Festival performed by the Royal Bhutan Army, and Bhutan’s National Day celebrations in Thimphu. This tour provides a meaningful insight into Bhutanese culture, history, and spirituality.
Day 01 (11 Dec): Arrival in Paro – Drive to Thimphu
Upon arrival in Paro, enjoy views of the Himalayas from one of the world’s most scenic flights. After clearing customs, you will be welcomed by a our representative. After lunch, visit Ta Dzong Museum, known for its rich collection of religious artifacts and art, followed by a visit to Rinpung Dzong, which houses beautiful murals including one of the great yogi Milarepa. In the late afternoon, drive to Thimphu (about 1.5 hours) along the Pachu River. In the evening, receive a short orientation on Bhutanese customs and etiquette before dinner. Overnight in Thimphu.
Day 02 (12 Dec): Thimphu Sightseeing
Today you will explore Bhutan’s capital city. Begin with a visit to the Buddha Dordenma statue, followed by the National Memorial Chorten, a spiritual landmark built in honor of the Third King. Continue to the 12th-century Changangkha Temple, then visit the National Library, which houses ancient Bhutanese scriptures. Conclude the day at Tashichhodzong, the seat of government and monastic administration. If it is the weekend, you can visit the lively Thimphu Weekend Market. Overnight in Thimphu.
Day 03 (13 Dec): Thimphu – Dochula – Druk Wangyal Tsechu – Punakha
After an early breakfast, drive up to Dochula Pass (3,100 meters) to witness the Druk Wangyal Tsechu, a unique festival performed by the Royal Bhutan Army to honor the Fourth King and Bhutan’s armed forces. The festival is set against a panoramic backdrop of snow-capped mountains. After the event, visit the Royal Botanical Park at Lamperi, then continue your journey to Punakha. Enjoy a relaxing evening stroll around Punakha town. Overnight in Punakha.
Day 04 (14 Dec): Punakha Exploration
Today begins with a visit to Punakha Dzong, a grand fortress located at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu rivers. Built in 1637, it served as Bhutan’s capital and remains the winter residence of the monastic body. In the afternoon, enjoy a scenic walk through the countryside to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the Divine Madman, known for his unconventional teachings and blessings for fertility. Overnight in Punakha or nearby Wangduephodrang.
Day 05 (15 Dec): Punakha – Paro via Wangdue
In the morning, drive to Yabesa village and hike through rice fields to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, built by the Queen Mother for peace and harmony. After a picnic lunch by the riverside, visit the ruins of Wangduephodrang Dzong, currently under restoration after a 2012 fire. En route to Paro, stop at Semtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s oldest fortress, now an institute for language and cultural studies. Arrive in Paro and check into your hotel. Overnight in Paro.
Day 06 (16 Dec): Paro – Taktsang Monastery Hike
After breakfast, embark on a hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), located on a cliff 900 meters above the valley floor. For those who prefer, a horse ride can be arranged up to the viewpoint. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche meditated here after flying on the back of a tigress. Stop for tea at a nearby rest point and enjoy the views. In the afternoon, visit the rebuilt Drukgyel Dzong and, weather permitting, see the majestic Mount Jomolhari in the distance. Overnight in Paro.
Day 07 (17 Dec): Paro – Thimphu – Paro (National Day Celebration)
Drive early to Thimphu to participate in Bhutan’s National Day celebrations at Changlimithang Stadium. The event commemorates the coronation of the first king in 1907 and includes cultural performances, military parades, and public festivities. After a full day of celebration, drive back to Paro. Overnight in Paro.
Day 08 (18 Dec): Departure from Paro
After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your departure flight. Your journey through the Land of the Thunder Dragon concludes with fond memories and blessings. Tashi Delek.

There shall be no charge for children up to the age of 5 years on Bhutan travel cost. However, those between the ages of 6 – 11 years get 50 % discount on daily rates.
